Get Your HVAC System Ready For Spring: a Checklist

Now that spring is arriving, it’s officially the perfect time to start prepping your HVAC system for the warmer days ahead. After working hard to keep your home warm all winter, your system needs a bit of attention to ensure it can transition smoothly into cooling mode.

Use this Spring HVAC checklist to keep your home comfortable and your energy bills low.

1. Replace or Clean Your Air Filters

This is the most critical step on your spring HVAC checklist. Filters that are clogged with dust and debris restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder and increasing wear and tear.

  • Disposable Filters: Inspect these monthly and replace them every 1 to 3 months.
  • Washable Filters: Vacuum away loose dust and rinse with water. Ensure they are completely dry before you put them back in.
  • HRV Units: Do not forget your Heat Recovery Ventilation filters. These should be serviced every 3 to 6 months to keep your indoor air fresh.

2. Clear Debris Around the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit needs plenty of space to breathe so it can release heat properly.

  • Clear the Area: Maintain at least two feet of clear space around the entire unit.
  • Clean the Fins: Use a soft brush or a gentle stream from a garden hose to wash away dirt. Never use a pressure washer, as the high pressure can damage the sensitive metal fins.

3. Check Vents and Intakes

Walk through your home to ensure that supply and return vents aren’t covered in dust or blocked by anything. Outside, check that intake and exhaust pipes are clear of debris or any nests. Clear airflow is essential for preventing your system from overheating.

4. Inspect Your Ductwork

Leaky ducts can lead to significant energy loss. If you notice certain rooms are harder to cool than others or see visible dust buildup around registers, your ducts might have gaps. While you can check for obvious disconnections, a professional can identify hidden leaks that impact your home’s efficiency.

5. Test Your Thermostat

Before the first true heatwave arrives, switch your thermostat to “cool” to make sure the air conditioner kicks in as expected. If you are still using an older model, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. This allows you to set schedules and monitor your home’s temperature from your phone, which helps save money when you are out enjoying the sunshine.

6. Monitor Refrigerant Levels

If you’ve run your AC but the air feels lukewarm you might have a refrigerant leak. Since refrigerant requires specialized tools and handling, this is a task that must be managed by a licensed technician to ensure the safety and longevity of your system.

7. Schedule a Professional Tune-up

While DIY steps are a great start, a professional tune-up is the best way to ensure total peace of mind. One of our Red Seal certified technicians can perform a deep clean, tighten electrical connections, and lubricate moving parts to prevent unexpected failures this spring.
